Why Bachelor of commerce in Economics
I have always been interested in how money, businesses, and governments work together to shape people’s everyday lives. Studying a Bachelor of commerce in Economics feels like the right path because it will give me the tools to understand these systems in depth and to play a part in solving real challenges. (3)
For me, Economics is not just about numbers – it’s about people. It’s about understanding why unemployment happens, why some communities grow faster than others, and what can be done to make opportunities more equal. A degree in Economics will equip me with the ability to analyse problems, think critically, and suggest practical solutions.
I also like that this qualification opens many doors. It prepares me for careers in finance, government, or even international organisations, but it also gives me flexibility to grow into different roles in the future. In a country like South Africa, where development and economic stability are so important, I believe Economics is one of the best ways to make a meaningful contribution.
On a personal level, I see this degree as a way to build both my career and my confidence in decision-making. Whether it’s managing finances, understanding business trends, or contributing to policy discussions, the skills I’ll gain will serve me for life. (3)
In short, I chose a BCom in Economics because it connects my curiosity about how the world works with my passion for making a positive impact in society.
Internship
I actually got my internship through GW Connect, a graduate placement programme that helps young professionals like me find opportunities with different companies. I applied through their platform, went through their selection process, and that’s how I was placed at Akhile Management and Consulting. It’s been a great opportunity because it gave me a foot in the door to gain real finance experience in a consulting environment.
Company
I’m currently working at Akhile Management and Consulting, which is a professional services firm that provides advisory, financial management, and consulting solutions to municipalities and other public sector entities. The company focuses on strengthening governance, improving financial management systems, and helping clients comply with regulations like the Municipal Finance Management Act.
As a finance intern, I’ve been involved in supporting projects related to revenue management, billing assessments, and policy reviews. I assist with data analysis, reporting, and ensuring financial information is accurate and aligned with compliance requirements. What I really value about working here is the exposure I’m getting to both the consulting environment and public sector finance, as it allows me to develop practical skills while contributing to meaningful projects that impact service delivery and community development.
